All these bottles are either plain or with black and white ceramic transferred labels.

Note the message at bottom. Part of the business plan of any cordial maker was the safe and reliable return of their empty bottles so they could be refilled at low costs to the company.

Rewards were offered to children for returning these bottles. For example, as a child John Montgomery collected similar bottles and returned them to a bottle agent and was paid one threepence per bottle.

Is this proof that the bottlers got along and helped each other - or an example of fierce competition between companies when returned bottles were in short supply? Or, is it simply a mistake?
